Gravure Printing for Pet Food Bags

Gravure printing uses engraved cylinders to transfer ink to film. It is suitable for detailed artwork, rich colors, and repeat orders. For pet food bags with multiple SKUs, cylinder planning should be discussed early because each color and design version affects setup cost.

Digital printing can be useful when testing new flavors, seasonal designs, limited editions, or market samples. It reduces the need for traditional plates or cylinders, making it easier to launch small quantities. However, digital printing is not always the most economical choice for large-volume pet food bags. For growing pet food brands, one practical approach is to use digital printing for trial sales and switch to gravure or flexo printing after the design becomes stable.

Printing Must Match Lamination and Sealing

Printing quality is only one part of pouch performance. After printing, the film may need lamination, curing, slitting, and pouch making. The ink system must match adhesive and film structure. Heavy ink areas should avoid heat-seal zones because sealing strength is critical for leakage prevention.

ASTM F88 measures seal strength in flexible barrier materials, while ASTM D3985 and ASTM F1249 are used for oxygen and water vapor transmission testing. These data points help connect printing choices with actual packaging protection.

How to Prepare Artwork for Printing

Before mass production, artwork should include correct dieline, bleed area, color mode, barcode location, eye mark, sealing margin, and version control. Text should be outlined, images should be high resolution, and nutrition panels should remain readable after pouch forming. For flat-bottom bags, each panel must be designed separately because front, back, side, and bottom areas fold differently.

A printed pouch supplier should also confirm matte finish, glossy finish, metallic effect, transparent window, zipper position, and tear notch before proofing. These decisions affect both visual quality and production efficiency.
